UMD Fire Protection Engineering Students and Faculty Visit MFRI

April 26, 2013 by admin

Some students and faculty from the Department of Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) at the University of Maryland, College Park  (UMD) were able to visit the Maryland Fire Research Institute (MFRI) where they were able to experience hands-on firefighter training. Participants donned full firefighting gear and breathing apparatus and were able to go  inside an enclosure fire, experiencing the dynamics of fire under fuel lean and rich conditions first hand. Activities also included crawling through a specialized pitch-black maze to simulate the low visibility conditions found in real fires. Students from Dr. Marino di Marzo’s honors seminar on Fire Protection dsc_0030Engineering and Dr. Stas Stoliarov’s Fire Protection Seminar course along with Dr. Michael Gollner, the newest member of the UMD FPE faculty participated.
