FPE PhD Candidate Sriram Bharath Wins 3rd Place in 2017 Dean’s Master’s Research Competition
Sriram Bharath, who will in the fall semester be a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, focusing on Fire Protection Engineering (FPE), has received third place in the 2017 Dean’s Master’s Research Competition from the UMD Clark School of Engineering for his research project, entitled, “The Structure of the Blue Whirl: A Soot-Free Reacting Vortex Phenomenon.” |
Bharath, originally from Bangalore, India, earned a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the BMS College of Engineering in Bangalore. He was drawn specifically to FPE because of the Department’s combustion expertise.
“I was interested in specializing in combustion and fluids for my graduate studies,” Bharath said. “My involvement with the blue whirl was actually just chance – when I met Dr. Gollner and took a tour through the lab space, I knew I wanted to work on this project as it gave the perfect opportunity to learn about combustion and fluid dynamics through experimental methods. It is definitely an exciting prospect when you, and your advisors, are learning alongside a very new and unique phenomenon.”
Bharath is advised by FPE Associate Professor Michael Gollner.
Congratulations, Sriram!
